Frequently Asked Questions
Our UCIL units are designed to be accessible to all undergraduate students and do not require prior knowledge of the subject area of the unit you study.
If your programme allows you to choose free-choice credits as part of your degree, you should be able to take a UCIL course unit.
If unsure, please contact your home school.

UCIL courses are aimed to be open to students at all levels of an undergraduate degree so the levels don’t apply in the same way as they do for other units.
For example a UCIL course coded UCIL2xxxx will generally be available to undergraduate students from first year to final year - if there is an exception to this or any pre-requisites these will be listed clearly on the unit's page on our unit catalogue.
No, there is no additional tuition fee to complete a UCIL unit.
You will enrol in a UCIL unit as part of your core degree (similar to any other unit), they appear on your transcript and count towards your GPA.
Depending on your School enrolment can be completed in one of two ways:
Enrolment using the Course Selection System
You may be able to enrol directly onto a UCIL unit using the Course Unit Enrolment System.
Enrolment via your School
If you cannot see the UCIL unit you wish to study or it is blocked out on the Course Unit Enrolment System, you may need to request approval to study the unit directly from your School.
For more details, please visit our how to enrol information.
Staff can’t enrol onto UCIL units in the same way as students can but can request to view some of our online units via our Blackboard Staffspace.
